Trump Says Iran Likely Behind Saudi Pipeline Attack
A reported projectile strike on a vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz and a drone attack that temporarily shut Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline have intensified concerns about disruptions to Middle Eastern energy supplies. Saudi Arabia said the pipeline attack originated in Iraq, prompting Iraqi authorities to investigate, dismiss a provincial commander and reportedly close a border crossing with Iran. President Donald Trump said Iran was probably responsible, but no group has claimed responsibility and Tehran has not been independently linked to the attack. The pipeline can carry about 4 million to 5 million barrels of oil per day while bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced disrupted shipping amid regional fighting. Iran-backed Houthi forces claimed additional attacks on Saudi targets and tightened their hold over the Bab al-Mandab corridor, while Iran’s president denied that his government was at war with Saudi Arabia. The developments pushed oil prices higher and increased the risk of further escalation across key maritime routes.
