Suspect Dies After Shooting Officer Outside Belleville Synagogue
A 29-year-old former Canadian Armed Forces member, Sean Ward of Quinte West, died in hospital after allegedly arriving by truck and firing a shotgun at Belleville police outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur services. Const. Jeff Smith was seriously wounded in the exchange and remains in critical but stable condition; his family said he faces a long recovery and launched a $450,000 fundraising campaign. A second officer also fired at Ward, and investigators estimate that 20 to 30 shots were discharged, damaging the synagogue’s stained-glass windows and leaving roughly two dozen bullet holes, but no worshippers were injured. Authorities have not confirmed whether Smith, the synagogue or the broader Jewish community was specifically targeted, and no motive has been established. Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the officers’ use of force, while an autopsy of Ward is planned; police have increased patrols around Jewish community sites. The shooting occurred amid increased reports of antisemitic incidents in Canada, including a separate alleged online threat against a Durham Region synagogue that led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man.
