Mexico Guard recruits tiny Chihuahua for rescue training

Mexico’s National Guard has added Comando, a 13-month-old Chihuahua weighing about 15 pounds, to its canine unit of roughly 350 dogs, most of them larger working breeds. He is training to navigate obstacles for potential search-and-rescue work, but his reported activities so far include ceremonies, school visits and community outreach. Officers say the smallest recruit challenges assumptions about which dogs can serve and helps make the force seem more approachable. Comando was adopted after his elderly owners could no longer care for him and has drawn attention in miniature protective gear, including at public events.
