Wounded captain unlocks door and stops cockpit takeover

Captain Smit Machchhar was on the floor of the flight deck, bleeding from multiple wounds, when he felt Flydubai Flight FZ1073 begin to fall. His co-pilot had stabbed him mid-flight and was trying to seize control of the Boeing 737 MAX 8. The aircraft, on its morning run from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, carried 174 passengers, 27 of them children.
“I had so many wounds. I had fallen down,” Machchhar later told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from a hospital bed, his head bandaged. “I was fighting for my life. At one point, I realized that if I didn’t get up … then passengers would lose their lives.” He got up. He unlocked the reinforced cockpit door. That single act let passengers and crew rush the deck, restrain the attacker, and keep the plane from becoming a mass-casualty crash. It is the clearest fact in the record, and it makes the conservative case without embroidery: public safety ultimately rests on the character of the person in the seat and the readiness of ordinary people to act when systems fail.
Flightradar24 data cited by NBC News showed the jet dropping from 30,875 feet to 16,750 feet in 29 seconds. Other reporting put the plunge near 14,125 feet or 14,300 feet in under 30 seconds. The transponder broadcast squawk 7700, the general emergency code, then squawk 7500 for unlawful interference, then another 7700. Saudi Arabia scrambled jets, fearing a hijack; Tabuk’s civilian airport sits beside a military base. The Israeli Air Force scrambled fighters as the flight neared Israeli airspace. The plane diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia and landed just before 10 a.m. Israel time.
Machchhar has been flying for 17 years and serving as a captain for 11. “I can sense exactly what is happening with the aircraft even with my eyes closed,” he told Modi. “When I was down, I could feel that the aircraft was plummeting.” In those minutes he recited the Hanuman Chalisa. “Lord Hanuman gave me courage.” Faith was not a slogan here. It was what he reached for while bleeding on a diving jet.
Once the door opened, the cabin answered. Yaniv Hayoun, an Israeli plumber traveling with his family, later described the moment: “I grabbed the attacker, put him in a chokehold, and dragged him out first.” Shota Musaev, described as the only doctor on board, applied tourniquets to Machchhar’s wounds. Tzvika Manes and Assaf Rajuan were among those who helped. Off-duty pilots traveling as passengers took the controls. The co-pilot, an Omani national employed less than a year by the airline according to one source, was restrained first with headphone cords and then with zip ties. Almog Italie told RT India the plain consequence: “If he wouldn’t open the door, we wouldn’t be alive.”
Four pilots total were on the flight. Two extras were aboard because of possible regional rerouting and extended duty hours. That staffing choice left trained hands available when the right seat turned into a threat. Philip Kean, CEO of the New Zealand flight school where Machchhar trained, stated the training gap without spin: “I don’t think there’s much in the handbook for being stabbed.” He added, “You’re friends and you’re flying together. Nobody would expect … a person to have a go at you like that.”
The record does not settle motive. UAE authorities opened an investigation into a possible hijacking or terrorist motive. Israeli officials have called it an attempted terror attack. Benjamin Netanyahu said it was too early to say whether Iran was involved and that investigators would determine whether the attacker had accomplices. A regional official told the Associated Press that all scenarios, from terrorism to mental disorders, were under review and nothing was ruled out. Flydubai described an “altercation,” secured the aircraft with on-duty crew, and suspended flights to and from Israel while facts were gathered. The airline urged parties to refrain from premature speculation. No fuller opposing policy brief appears in the available record beyond that call for restraint.
Modi praised Machchhar’s courage, patience, and presence of mind and said his resolve protected the lives of others. Netanyahu called him a true hero. Breitbart headlined leaders celebrating the Indian pilot who saved the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight from a would-be hijacker. Machchhar is married and has two children. After initial treatment in Tabuk he was moved to Abu Dhabi and reported in stable condition.
Post-9/11 cockpit doors were built to keep external threats out. They cannot, by design, stop a crew member already inside with legitimate access. That is the structural fact this episode puts back on the table. Vetting, continuous screening, and hiring standards are the duties of carriers and the governments that oversee them. When those fail, the cost falls first on the captain who must reopen the door while wounded and on the passengers who must decide in seconds whether to rush a flight deck. Limited government does not mean weak security. It means the state and the enterprise do the hard, unglamorous work of keeping dangerous people out of the right seat so that ordinary families do not have to invent a chokehold at 16,000 feet.
National sovereignty and the border are not abstractions on a route into Tel Aviv. A flight carrying civilians, including 27 children, became the scene of an alleged attempt to crash the aircraft. Public safety and the rule of law require that insider threats be treated as real risks, not as afterthoughts. Free enterprise and the taxpayer underwrite the aviation system; both have a claim on standards equal to the risk.
The investigation remains open. Saudi authorities conducted the initial probe after the landing. The UAE is examining terrorist intent and prior planning. The co-pilot was arrested in Saudi Arabia and remains under interrogation. What the screening files and digital footprint ultimately show is the next decision the record has not yet delivered.
