What it's about
Karen Armstrong traces how the idea of God has been continually reimagined across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, from tribal deity to philosophical absolute to mystical presence. She argues that God is not a fixed reality discovered once but a human construct reshaped by each era's needs, and that literalism is a modern, historically anomalous way of reading scripture. The book mattered because it reframed monotheism as a living conversation rather than a settled doctrine, at a moment of rising fundamentalism.

What’s inside
- 1A God Among Gods1 min
The god of early Israel emerged not as a sudden revelation of the one true deity but as one tribal god among many who gradually eclipsed his rivals through political and social circumstance.
- 2One God, Universal Claim1 min
Once Yahweh became the sole God rather than merely the strongest, Judaism had to develop new intellectual tools—covenant, law, and eventually philosophy—to explain a deity with no rivals and no natural limits.
- 3The Christian Complication1 min
Christianity's claim that God became human in Jesus was not a natural extension of Jewish monotheism but a radical, contested innovation that took centuries of councils and controversy to stabilize into orthodoxy.
- 4Reason Enters the Temple1 min
Medieval Jewish, Christian, and Islamic philosophers converged on a philosophical God—necessary, simple, immutable—that increasingly diverged from the passionate, storytelling God of scripture, creating a split between the God of the philosophers and the God of religious experience.
- 5The Mystics' Rebellion1 min
Mysticism across all three traditions arose as a corrective to philosophical abstraction, insisting that God is known through direct, often ineffable experience rather than through argument or doctrine.
- 6God on Trial: Reformation and Reason1 min
The Reformation and the rise of modern science did not simply weaken belief in God but forced a fateful shift toward literalism, as Protestants and later scientific rationalists began treating scripture and God as objects of factual proof rather than symbolic or mystical truth.
- 7Death of God and Fundamentalist Backlash1 min
The apparent decline of God in the modern West, announced by thinkers like Nietzsche, provoked not secular consensus but a defensive fundamentalism that clings to literal readings precisely because the old symbolic and mystical resources had been lost.
- 8Toward a Chastened, Apophatic Future1 min
Armstrong closes by arguing that recovering the older apophatic and mystical traditions, which treat God as ultimately unknowable, offers a more honest and less dangerous path forward than either literalist fundamentalism or dismissive atheism.
