What it's about
Dave Cullen spent ten years reconstructing the 1999 Columbine High School massacre from court records, journals, videos, and interviews, and used that reporting to dismantle the myths the media invented within hours of the attack. He argues the shooting was a failed bombing, not a targeted revenge spree, and that understanding the killers' actual psychology matters more than the comforting stories communities told themselves. The book mattered because it corrected a national narrative that had shaped school policy, media coverage of later shootings, and public understanding of teenage violence for a decade.

Who it's for
- Readers who want the documented facts behind a widely mythologized event, not the tabloid version - Journalists, educators, and policymakers who study how early reporting on tragedy becomes false permanent memory - Anyone trying to understand the difference between clinical psychopathy and suicidal depression in the context of real violence
What’s inside
- 1The Myth Forms Before the Facts1 min
The public narrative about Columbine solidified within hours of the attack and was almost entirely wrong, yet it outlived the correction.
- 2A Bombing That Became a Shooting1 min
Columbine was designed as a mass-casualty bombing on the scale of Oklahoma City, and the shooting spree the world remembers was an improvised fallback after the bombs failed.
- 3Two Different Minds, One Massacre1 min
The attack required the specific pairing of a calculating psychopath and a suicidal depressive, and neither temperament alone would likely have produced it.
- 4The Warnings That Went Nowhere1 min
Law enforcement had specific, actionable warnings about Eric Harris more than a year before the attack and failed to act on them.
- 5Protecting the Institution1 min
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spent years concealing evidence of its prior knowledge of Eric Harris to limit its own liability, at direct cost to the public's ability to draw accurate lessons from the tragedy.
- 6The Martyr Who Wasn't1 min
The story that shaped the nation's religious response to Columbine, that a student was shot for saying she believed in God, was substantially inaccurate and took shape only after the fact.
- 7A Community's Need for a Redemptive Story1 min
Columbine's community shaped its memory of the event around redemptive and moral narratives more than around the documented facts, because meaning mattered more than accuracy to people trying to survive their grief.
- 8Columbine as a Template for Later Killers1 min
The myth-built version of Columbine, not the accurate one, became a script that inspired later mass shooters, which makes accurate reporting a matter of public safety rather than just historical correction.
- 9The Long, Uneven Recovery1 min
Recovery for Columbine's survivors was slower, more private, and less linear than the media's one-year and ten-year anniversary narratives of closure suggested.
About Dave Cullen
Dave Cullen is a journalist who began covering Columbine for Salon.com on the day of the shooting, April 20, 1999, and continued reporting on it for the next decade. He later wrote Parkland, about the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting and its student survivors, drawing on the same methodical, myth-skeptical reporting style.
