What it's about
Azar Nafisi recounts the private literature seminar she ran for seven women in Tehran after resigning her university post, reading Nabokov, Fitzgerald, James, and Austen under a regime that policed both books and bodies. The memoir argues that fiction's tolerance for ambiguity is itself a form of resistance to ideologies that demand a single, enforced version of reality, and that the imaginative life of ordinary women is a legitimate historical record of the Iranian revolution's aftermath.

Who it's for
- Readers of memoir who want a personal account of life under the Islamic Republic told through literature rather than politics. - Students and teachers of literature interested in how novels can be read as acts of resistance under censorship. - Anyone curious about women's daily negotiations with authoritarian law in postrevolutionary Iran.
What’s inside
- 1The Secret Class1 min
Nafisi argues that a classroom hidden from the state produced more honest thinking than any officially sanctioned one could, because only in privacy could her students remove their veils, speak without fear, and meet a text on its own terms.
- 2Humbert's Tehran1 min
Nafisi contends that Humbert Humbert's crime in Lolita is not merely sexual but epistemological—he replaces Dolores's actual existence with his own fantasy of her—and that this same act of erasure is what an ideological state performs on its citizens.
- 3The Gatsby Trial1 min
Nafisi argues that ideological readers, trained to treat every story as a verdict for or against a cause, cannot tolerate a novel's built-in contradictions, and this intolerance is what she demonstrates by staging a mock trial of The Great Gatsby years before the private class began.
- 4Daisy Miller's Freedom1 min
Nafisi holds that Henry James's Daisy Miller matters to her students less for its plot than for its central wager, that a woman's insistence on judging situations for herself is worth defending even when it costs her reputation or her life.
- 5Austen's Arithmetic of Choice1 min
Nafisi reads Pride and Prejudice not as a romance but as a study of how much real choice a woman can exercise inside a system that controls her economic and social survival, a question she argues is more urgent in Tehran than in Regency England.
- 6War at the Border of the Living Room1 min
Nafisi argues that the Iran-Iraq War of 1980 to 1988, largely absent from the literature discussed in her class, nonetheless reorganized the domestic and psychological terms on which every later argument about freedom in the book takes place.
- 7Seven Women, Seven Arguments1 min
Nafisi contends that the seven students in her class, despite living under identical laws, experienced and resisted those laws so differently that the memoir undercuts any single story of what it means to be a woman in the Islamic Republic.
- 8The Last Class and the Decision to Leave1 min
Nafisi argues that leaving Iran in 1997 was not an abandonment of the resistance the book describes but its logical extension, because writing about the private class required a distance and freedom the country could no longer offer her.
