What it's about
Alain de Botton examines why modern people, despite unprecedented material comfort, are gripped by chronic worry about their standing relative to others. He traces this anxiety to the collapse of fixed social hierarchies and the rise of meritocratic belief, which makes worldly failure feel like personal failure. Drawing on philosophy, religion, art, and history, de Botton diagnoses the causes of status anxiety and proposes five imperfect but real remedies for living with it.

What’s inside
- 1The Problem of Status1 min
Status anxiety is not vanity but a rational response to living in societies where love and resources are distributed according to worldly success.
- 2Lovelessness1 min
Status anxiety is at bottom a fear of being unloved, because social status functions as a public proxy for how much others value us.
- 3Snobbery1 min
Snobbery is not an occasional character flaw but a structural feature of any society organized around visible rank, and everyone practices and suffers from it.
- 4Expectation1 min
Status anxiety has intensified not because life has gotten worse but because we now expect vastly more from life than previous generations dared to hope for.
- 5Meritocracy1 min
The belief that success and failure are earned through personal merit, rather than luck, turns economic inequality into a moral judgment on character.
- 6Job Insecurity and Dependence1 min
Status has become newly precarious because livelihoods now depend on volatile markets and organizations rather than on stable, inherited, or guild-based occupations.
- 7Philosophy as Consolation1 min
Philosophical reasoning can loosen status anxiety's grip by exposing how arbitrary and socially constructed most status judgments actually are.
- 8Art as Consolation1 min
Literature and art console status anxiety by giving dignity and interest to lives and failures that worldly hierarchies dismiss as insignificant.
- 9Politics and Religion as Consolation1 min
Status hierarchies are historically contingent political constructions, and recognizing their constructed, changeable nature both explains their power and opens room to challenge them.
