What it's about
Alain de Botton pairs six philosophers with six common miseries—unpopularity, poverty, frustration, inadequacy, heartbreak, and hardship—to argue that philosophy's original purpose was therapeutic, not academic. Drawing on Socrates, Epicurus, Seneca, Montaigne, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche, he shows each thinker offering practical reasoning against a specific pain. The book mattered because it reintroduced philosophy to general readers as a usable tool for living, reviving an older tradition that modern academic philosophy had largely abandoned.

What’s inside
- 1Philosophy as Therapy1 min
Philosophy's oldest and most useful function is not to build abstract systems but to treat the specific pains of everyday life.
- 2Socrates and Unpopularity1 min
Socrates shows that being unpopular is only alarming if popularity itself is a reliable guide to truth, which it is not.
- 3Epicurus and Not Having Enough Money1 min
Epicurus argues that most of what we buy to feel secure and admired does nothing to reduce actual suffering, and that friendship, autonomy, and reflection matter far more than money.
- 4Seneca and Frustration1 min
Seneca contends that frustration comes not from external events but from the gap between what we expect life to give us and what it actually owes us.
- 5Montaigne and Inadequacy1 min
Montaigne suggests our sense of inadequacy comes from comparing our messy, embodied selves to invented ideals that no real person, including the most eminent, actually meets.
- 6Schopenhauer and a Broken Heart1 min
Schopenhauer's account of love as an impersonal biological drive is meant to console the heartbroken by showing that romantic devastation is not a verdict on their individual worth.
- 7Nietzsche and Hardship1 min
Nietzsche argues that a life without difficulty is not one to envy, because our finest qualities are produced only through struggle.
