What it's about
Janet Malcolm uses the lawsuit convicted murderer Jeffrey MacDonald filed against writer Joe McGinniss to argue that journalism's basic method—winning a subject's trust to extract material, then using that material against the subject—is structurally deceptive. Reporting on the 1987 trial over McGinniss's bestseller Fatal Vision, Malcolm turns one extreme betrayal into a broader indictment of interviewing itself, implicating herself along with every writer who has ever profiled another person for money.

What’s inside
- 1A Doctor, a Massacre, and a Book Deal1 min
The lawsuit Jeffrey MacDonald brought against Joe McGinniss exposed a conflict of interest that is built into the basic transaction of journalism, not just into one writer's bad faith.
- 2The Confidence Game of the Interview1 min
The rapport a journalist builds with a subject is a technique of extraction, not a genuine relationship, and the subject's inability to see this in the moment is what makes the work possible.
- 3The Letters That Kept the Story Alive1 min
McGinniss did not merely withhold his doubts about MacDonald's innocence — he actively manufactured years of encouraging correspondence to keep a valuable, cooperating subject producing material.
- 4A Trial That Could Not Settle the Question1 min
The civil trial's hung jury and eventual private settlement show that the ethics of journalistic betrayal cannot be fully adjudicated by fraud law.
- 5Manufacturing the Psychopath1 min
McGinniss's portrait of MacDonald as a textbook narcissistic psychopath was shaped as much by the needs of narrative coherence as by settled clinical evidence.
- 6MacDonald's Own Performance1 min
MacDonald was not a passive victim of McGinniss's betrayal; his vanity, appetite for media attention, and need to control his own story made him an active partner in the process that undid him.
- 7The Book That Implicates Its Own Author1 min
Malcolm's real subject is not McGinniss alone; she used the identical technique of performed sympathy on McGinniss and others to get them talking, which makes her complicit in the very practice she is condemning.
