The Manager's Path

What it's about
Camille Fournier argues that management in technology companies is a distinct craft that must be learned, not a reward bestowed on strong engineers. She maps a ladder of roles—from mentor to CTO—showing how the skills, anxieties, and responsibilities shift at each rung. The book mattered because it gave a generation of engineers promoted into leadership a concrete, unsentimental vocabulary for problems no one had named for them: one-on-ones, skip-levels, technical debt politics, and the loneliness of the org chart.

Start a circle and share the code — everyone sees everyone's honest place in the book. Accountability, not leaderboards.
Who it's for
- A senior engineer just told they're becoming a manager and unsure what changes - A CTO or VP trying to build a management pipeline that doesn't burn people out - A new manager stuck between wanting to keep coding and needing to lead people
What’s inside
- 1The Individual Contributor's First Steps1 min
Being technically excellent does not prepare you for management, and the two skill sets can even conflict.
- 2Becoming a Tech Lead1 min
The tech lead role is fundamentally about diffusing your own technical decision-making into a team's shared understanding, not about being the smartest person in the room.
- 3The New Manager's Shock1 min
The first management role is a psychological rupture because your success is now measured by outcomes you cannot directly produce yourself.
- 4Managing Managers and the Widening Gap1 min
Managing other managers requires giving up direct visibility into daily work and trusting systems and reports instead of firsthand observation.
- 5Directing Multiple Teams and Organizational Design1 min
At the director level, the job shifts from managing people to designing the structures—team boundaries, communication paths, and incentives—that determine how people behave.
- 6VP and the Work of Culture1 min
At the VP level, a leader's job becomes shaping culture and incentives indirectly, because they are now too far from daily work to influence it any other way.
- 7The CTO's Divided Mandate1 min
The CTO role splits into fundamentally different jobs—technical visionary, external evangelist, or internal operations chief—and conflating them causes many CTOs to fail.
