Cardinals Beat Pirates as Mathews Earns MLB Win
Rookie left-hander Quinn Mathews earned his first major league win by working 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, and Jimmy Crooks delivered a two-run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1, with Walker contributing multiple hits. The win keeps the Cardinals within reach in the NL wild-card race as they pull ahead 6-2 this season against the Pirates and rely on a strong bullpen finish after Mathews exited.
