South Korea will continue its sovereign AI model competition while creating a separate, proposed 4.7 trillion won ($3.5 billion) frontier-AI program for 2027, with development aimed at cutting-edge capabilities and the existing effort shifting toward industrial deployment. The government says the new initiative will be open to a range of participants and is intended to strengthen competitiveness and address challenges including cybersecurity threats.
South Korea concluded Oct. 5 that North Korean mines planted south of the MDL caused the Sept. 21 DMZ blast injuring three soldiers; two remain hospitalized.
