AirTrunk plans A$43 billion Japan data-centre expansion amid AI surge

AirTrunk plans to invest up to US$30 billion (about A$43 billion) in Japan over five years, more than doubling its data center capacity there to over 1 gigawatt as demand for AI and cloud computing surges. The Blackstone-owned operator is also adding US$1 billion to its Inzai campus, including liquid-cooling technology designed for high-density AI workloads, supported by a green loan from major banks. The expansion highlights how the AI boom is driving major investment in power, land and other digital infrastructure, while electricity access and suitable sites remain significant constraints.
