Charleston Landmark Church Marks 275 Years
Charleston’s St. Michael’s Church is marking its 275th anniversary with a renewed effort to share its history and welcome visitors. The church, commissioned in 1751 and completed in 1761, remains an active place of worship and a prominent landmark at the Four Corners of Law. Its 186-foot steeple has endured fires, hurricanes, a tornado and the 1886 earthquake, and has become an enduring feature of the city’s skyline. Anniversary-year plans include monthly historical exhibitions, expanded tours and other visitor resources, while church leaders emphasize preserving the site and continuing its ministry.
