Catholic Archbishop Urges Exemptions From Hasan Firing Squad
Archbishop Timothy Broglio has urged Catholic service members to seek exemptions from the firing squad scheduled to execute Nidal Malik Hasan on Dec. 3, saying participation conflicts with Catholic teaching against capital punishment. Hasan was convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation says dozens of soldiers have raised concerns about taking part, and its director expects more requests; some fear the moral implications and having their families watch. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced plans to livestream the execution, drawing criticism from lawmakers, while Vice President JD Vance has expressed doubt the livestream will happen and said he would not watch.
