Ebola Spreads Across Congo, Kenya Reports First Death
The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to spread despite efforts to contain earlier hotspots, with North Kivu emerging as a major center of new cases. Response efforts are hampered by conflict, population movements, poor contact tracing and coordination, and shortages of health workers and supplies; many cases and deaths are occurring outside treatment centers. The virus has also crossed borders, with Kenya reporting a fatal case linked to travel from the region and Rwanda and Burundi screening arriving Congolese refugees, including through quarantine measures. Bundibugyo Ebola is not airborne: it spreads through direct contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids or contaminated materials, and can also pass from infected animals to humans. Health workers and aid groups warn that continued transmission is straining already limited medical and humanitarian resources.
