Inmate Deaths Under Investigation in New Mexico, Oklahoma

Oklahoma County authorities are investigating the death of 47-year-old Lloyd Woodson Smith, who was found unresponsive at the Oklahoma City Detention Center around 11:10 p.m. Saturday. Staff attempted lifesaving measures and called Oklahoma City Fire personnel before Smith was taken to a hospital, where he died. Smith had been booked into the jail on Sept. 2, and officials have not disclosed the circumstances or cause of death. His death is the county jail’s fourth inmate death in 2026; reports also note a history of multiple in-custody deaths at the facility.
