James Gunn Confirms Writing Next Film

James Gunn answered a fan on Threads who asked if he was ready to write his next film. He said he was already in it and had needed something to do while waiting on the cut of Superman: Man of Tomorrow. He also confirmed that film's assembly cut is complete. Filming wrapped in August. The sequel reaches theaters July 9, 2027. It follows 2025's Superman, with David Corenswet back opposite Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor against Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. Returning cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El after headlining Supergirl. Aaron Pierre joins as John Stewart, also debuting in HBO Max's Lanterns. Gunn has co-led DC Studios with Peter Safran since 2022. In January he told Variety that Safran keeps the ship steady and that they take seriously the privilege of shaping how people see these characters. CONTESTED: Sources split on his Threads wording—some quote “waiting for the assembly,” others “waiting for the edit.” He has not named the next project. Coverage of the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery deal notes Ellison's invitation to stay at Skydance and the reporting line to Goldberg and Greenstein.
