Police Issue Scam Warnings Across Four States
Police and local officials in Cortland, New York; Thurston County, Washington; and Casper, Wyoming, are warning residents about fake invoices tied to municipal permits and services. The fraudulent messages impersonate city or county offices and seek payment by wire transfer, which officials say is not a required payment method for the services involved and can be difficult or impossible to reverse. Residents should not pay, click links, or respond to suspicious invoices; instead, they should confirm charges directly with the relevant office using independently verified contact information and report suspicious messages.
