Poll: Most Americans Say AI Develops Too Fast
A new AP-NORC poll finds 64% of U.S. adults believe AI is developing too quickly, and roughly eight in 10 say the government should prioritize keeping AI under human control and protecting workers. Concern about the pace crosses party lines, though Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say development is too fast; views also differ on environmental protections and competing with China. Confidence in political leaders is limited: 67% disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of AI, and 39% say neither party can be trusted to handle the issue well. Few adults say they have used or plan to use AI for election information, including only 10% who say they might use it to decide whom to vote for. Separately, New York City lawmakers questioned representatives of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta about AI safety and accountability, amid debate over whether the industry can regulate itself and calls for stronger safeguards.
