Savannah Port Sets September Container Record
The Port of Savannah handled a record 504,015 TEUs in September, up 3.7% from a year earlier, helping Georgia Ports Authority post a fiscal first quarter of more than 1.5 million TEUs—its second-best on record. Strong consumer spending and an extended peak season contributed to growth, as typhoon-related delays at Asian ports shifted cargo arrivals into September; imports rose 5.5%. The authority is expanding capacity through a $1.6 billion renovation of Ocean Terminal, now more than 60% complete and designed to raise its capacity from 200,000 to 1.75 million TEUs. A new truck corridor to Garden City Terminal has also improved road access while bypassing neighborhood streets and rail crossings.
