Tornadoes Reported in South Carolina; High-Wind Alert in Tennessee
Tornadoes touched down in South Carolina’s Allendale and Screven counties on Saturday, causing confirmed damage including downed trees; forecasters also reported a confirmed tornado near Barnwell County earlier in the afternoon. Tornado warnings were later in effect for parts of Aiken and Screven counties, with a dangerous storm tracking toward New Holland and additional tornado-capable storms moving through the region. Tornado watches remained in effect until 8 p.m. for Aiken County and for Allendale, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton and Jasper counties; officials urged people in threatened areas to shelter in a sturdy building’s lowest-level interior room, away from windows, and monitor local alerts. Separately, a high-wind warning forecast gusts up to 60 mph in Cherokee and Clay counties in Tennessee from midnight Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday, with possible tree damage and power outages.
