Jury Selection Continues in Hedgepeth Murder Trial
Jury selection in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial entered its seventh day Tuesday, with all 12 regular jurors seated and three of four alternate positions filled. Opening statements are expected once the final alternate is selected. Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill student, was killed in her Durham apartment in 2012. Miguel Salguero Olivares, arrested in 2021 after DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene and murder weapon, has pleaded not guilty to murder, burglary, rape and sexual offense charges. Prosecutors allege he raped and killed Hedgepeth, while the defense says the evidence is insufficient to establish his guilt. If convicted, he could face life in prison but not the death penalty.
