A large industrial unit fire on Southend Road between East Hanningfield and Rettendon caused enormous explosions and a massive smoke plume visible across south Essex, with residents reporting their homes shaking and windows rattling miles away. Fire authorities urged nearby residents to stay clear, close windows and doors, and await updates as investigators determine the cause.

About Rettendon

Rettendon is a village and civil parish in the Chelmsford district of Essex, England. It lies about 8 miles (13 km) south-east of the city of Chelmsford. There are two main built up parts of Rettendon, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) apart, sometimes distinguished as Rettendon Common to the north and Rettendon Place to the south. The parish church, village school and village hall are at Rettendon Place.
