Christa Pike, 50, received two syringes of pentobarbital one hour apart during an execution attempt on Sept. 30, 2026, at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Witnesses said she was speaking before it began. After both doses she remained conscious, with a heartbeat and audible snoring, and was taken to an off-site medical facility after 11 p.m. ET. The U.S. Supreme Court had lifted a temporary stay hours earlier. Pike was sentenced for the 1995 torture-murder of classmate Colleen Slemmer, committed when she was 18, and would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years. Her attorneys said, "Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution," and that concerns about difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, and no emergency medical care "proved to be true" under a protocol veiled in secrecy. They filed an emergency motion arguing unnecessary agony and cruel and unusual punishment and said they had not been informed of her condition. The Tennessee Department of Correction said it followed every step of the lawful protocol approved by the Attorney General's Office and that the chemical has consistently been effective. Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent third-party review and halted the remaining 2026 execution, saying the public expects sentences carried out in a manner that is legal, constitutional, and effective. Her condition and long-term status were not resolved in the record.

Who cares she abused and murdered a person. You can always bring back the firing squad or hanging. She should have no dignity in this!!!
Justice for Colleen?
Halting the rest of this year's executions was the only sensible move after what happened.
The failed execution shows why lethal injection keeps running into problems with veins and dosing.
