ICE Shooting Wounds Man, Sparks NYC Clashes
An ICE agent shot and wounded 28-year-old Oscar Belgal during an attempted arrest in New York’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday; his 5-year-old son was in the car but was not injured. DHS described Belgal as a Dominican national with a prior grand-larceny conviction and other arrests. NYPD body-camera footage released Friday showed officers finding Belgal handcuffed and injured and rushing him to a hospital; officials said multiple rounds were fired, but DHS has not explained what prompted the shooting, which remains under investigation. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said ICE removed Belgal from the hospital, that his whereabouts were unknown, and that he had unsuccessfully sought Belgal’s release; Mamdani also called for ICE to be abolished. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the hospital, where protesters clashed with police and several people were reportedly arrested. At a concurrent community hearing, immigrants and advocates described fear, family separation, detention conditions and economic harm linked to the immigration crackdown.
